I am buying a car from a private owner. What’s the minimum requirement to insure a car in Mississippi?

Ed

Jackson, Mississippi

Mississippi demands that the insurer should have a liability coverage in their insurance company of certain amount. That holds $25,000 for a person limited to a single accident, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage on one accident. You could abide by the required minimum by posting a bond of the same minimum amount required, by carrying a liability insurance equal to the minimum amount, or creating a security deposit or by cash up to the minimum required.

The insurance law doesn’t hold a compulsory when you register a car. Once your motor vehicle is operated along roadways of the state, it necessary to show proof of liability at all times using an insurance card on each vehicle. It is important to keep such proof to avoid infractions which could drastically increase your premium rate too. The penalty for first-hand offense related to that is $1000 and suspension of driver’s license until such time you have shown proof of insurance.

If you already have an existing insurance policy, you need to contact your insurer to inquire whether they will extend your coverage policy to the added new vehicle.

I got an auto insurance quote that gives me full coverage. What does it mean? Aren’t insurance policies supposed to cover for everything?

Mariel

Jackson MS

Mississippi insurance companies give people an auto insurance quote depending on a number of factors. This could be age, gender plus a lot more. What some forget is that the type of coverage is also included in the computation. Coverage is the benefits that a policy gives a holder in the event that something happens like an accident. In the automobile insurance business, coverage is divided into four general types.

Let us first look at the most important coverage you can have and that is liability. One benefit that liability coverage gives you is protection from being sued by people who experienced injuries in an accident which was mainly your fault. Be careful when looking at the benefits. This type of coverage has what is known as split limits. For example, your policy could state that you have $300,000 worth of coverage. What this can means is that $200,000 is the limit for bodily injuries while $100,000 is for property damage. So if you are involved in an accident and the other party would need to spend $250,000 for medical expenses, you have to shell out the remaining $50,000.

But what about medical expenses for the injuries you sustained? Some auto insurance quote also has medical payments coverage. If liability coverage pays for the injuries done to the other party, this type of coverage will pay for the injuries you experienced. This coverage will also protect and pay you regardless of who was at fault.

You can also have coverage that will protect your own car. There are two categories for this coverage. First there is collision coverage, which obviously, covers you against collisions. Other-than-collision or comprehensive coverage will insure your car and cover for losses resulting from theft, fire, vandalism and yes, even animal accidents.

Finally there is coverage against uninsured motorists. This will help you recoup losses if the accident was caused by a party who were either uninsured or you failed to identify.

Hopefully that clears it up for you Mariel. Ask your agent or the company itself what offers are included in the Mississippi auto insurance quote that they gave you.

I want to get a life insurance in Mississippi. Friends advised me to get life insurance with no medical exam because I’m already in my forties. Is that type of life insurance best suited for my age?

Justin

Jackson MS

With just your age as the basis, we cannot tell much what life insurance policy fits you. So, instead we will give you idea what is life insurance with no medical exam about, so you can decide if this is the type of insurance meant for you. Some insurance companies created the life insurance with no medical exam type of policy to answer the needs of those people who are classified as uninsurable by other insurers. This is to help people who get frustrated for being denied of insurance because they fail the medical exam, which is a requirement in applying for a life insurance policy. This type of insurance is commonly known as ‘guaranteed approval life insurance’ or ‘guaranteed issue life insurance.’

Policies of life insurance with no medical exam will no longer subject an applicant to some tedious underwriting procedures. It can be as easy as sending them the required money, and you get a guaranteed issue life insurance. But in exchange for the absence of medical exams, you are expected to pay higher premium – as high as 100% more than the typical life insurance that requires medical assessments. The price of guaranteed approval life insurance can be one of the downsides of this type of insurance. So before getting a guaranteed approval life insurance policy, it is best you check other options first.

You should apply first to term life insurance if you want pure life insurance policy. Or, if you want to have a policy that combines life insurance and investment, you can look into the permanent life insurance category. You mostly will get approved for term or permanent life insurance as long as you are healthy even at your age of forty. The premium can be higher because of your age but, mostly, it will still come as lower compared to the guaranteed life insurance’s premium.

If you are repeatedly denied of an insurance coverage, then it’s time you consider life insurance with no medical exam. People with advance stage of chronic disease or cancer, have mental or neurological diseases, diagnosed with AIDS or HIV combined with old age are the most likely candidate for guaranteed approval life insurance policy as they mostly will get be turned down for a regular term or permanent life insurance policy. If you can be classified as such, then you are more likely a candidate for guaranteed approval insurance in Mississippi.

Will I get in trouble here in Mississippi if I drive around without auto insurance coverage? I will buy coverage if I really have to but if it isn’t a state requirement then I would rather spend that money elsewhere. Thanks!

Karen

Jackson, MS

The short answer is YES. Mississippi, like most states these days, have financial responsibility laws that require every motorist to be able financially capable of paying for injuries or damages they cause in an auto accident. That means it’s illegal to be operating a vehicle if you don’t have auto insurance coverage. So you really need to buy auto insurance since it’s the law.

With the kind of economy we have these days, it is quite understandable (even commendable) that you are very hesitant to throw good money on something unnecessary. So here are some tips on how to get auto insurance coverage without breaking your budget:

1. Compare Rates Online – Using auto insurance portals (like this website) that offer an auto insurance free quote. This will help you find the insurers that have the lowest rates out there.

2. Simplify Your Coverage – Some people only need liability coverage. If you don’t think you need full comprehensive coverage then remove the excess of your policy. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is one example; a good medical insurance can easily substitute this.

3. Drive Responsibly – Maintaining a good driving record is the best way to ensure affordable auto insurance rates for many years to come.

4. Ask for Discounts – There are many available so don’t hesitate to ask insurers about the ones you’re eligible to get.

5. Pick a Bigger Deductible – Choosing a bigger deductible amount will lead to substantially lower premiums.

You would be at a far higher financial risk for not carry auto insurance coverage, especially if you get into an auto accident. So get that auto insurance free quote and find an insurer that best fits your needs today.

Reader’s Question:

I had a DUI conviction a couple of years back, how will that affect premiums on my auto insurance in Mississippi?

Marla

Jackson, Mississippi

The minimum basic liability coverage for auto insurance in Mississippi includes $25,000 per person in a single accident, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 per accident damages to property. Having a driving under the influence conviction, however, will add an additional requirement for you: an SR-22 auto insurance policy.

The SR-22, which must be maintained for three years, is a proof of financial responsibility on your part.

Also, when you are taking out coverage for auto insurance in Mississippi, chances are you will see higher premiums because of the conviction. Remember that having a clean driving record helps keep premiums down because insurance companies see you as a low risk individual.

The good news is a DUI conviction does not stay on your record forever. In fact, for insurance purposes, it is reflected on your record for a maximum of three years. In the meantime, do not drink and drive, so that after three years, you would have a clean slate and better chances of getting cheaper premiums.

Take heart, there are other ways to get cheaper premiums on auto insurance. Be sure to shop around using the Internet or by calling up insurance companies. Be upfront about having the DUI conviction and ask if they have any discounts that you can avail from them.

Also, choose to pay for a higher deductible. In the event that you file a claim, the deductible is the amount you pay before the insurance company steps in. A mere $200 increase in deductible could cut your premiums by 25%

Drive an older car. Not only do older cars give you lower premiums, you can also do away with expensive collision and comprehensive coverage. If you have a problem with alcohol, which is what got you here in the first place, you might also want to consider driving less. That way you can avail of low mileage discounts on your auto insurance in Minnesota.

Can you give us an idea about what SR22 auto insurance is? My husband needs to get one so we can get his license back immediately! Thanks!

Amandine

Biloxi, MS

Most drivers’ have no idea what an SR22 auto insurance is, when and where to purchase one, and why it is important for the mutual protection of everyone on the road. That is, until their driver’s licenses get suspended due to a DUI arrest, repeated driving violations, unsettled traffic tickets, or for causing a vehicular accident without carrying at least the minimum levels of auto insurance mandated by the state. At this point, getting to know more about an SR22 Mississippi auto insurance coverage is a must.

SR22 is a form or certificate submitted by an authorized auto insurance company, in behalf of someone who has shown risky/unsatisfactory driving habits, to the Office of the Secretary of State or The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. It aims to enforce the financial responsibility laws of Mississippi upon high-risk motorists, the law being that anyone who drives must carry enough financial means (e.g. auto insurance) to pay people they injure or properties damaged upon causing an auto accident.

So in order to get you driving again, an SR22 Mississippi auto insurance policy is a must. Not all auto insurance providers can file this for you, so you may need to get in touch with the DMV for a list of authorized providers. You may also search for a suitable SR22 auto insurance carrier on the Web, which is faster and is much more convenient in many ways.

There are tons of dedicated SR22 websites or portals which can help you easily locate the SR22 auto insurance policy that best suits your needs. You can get instant quote checks to compare rates coming from a wider selection of SR22 Mississippi auto insurance providers in your area. The best thing about this is it’s free, and none of the inconveniences having to deal with so much auto insurance agents or brokers. Save yourself time by shopping and filing an SR22 form through the Web today!

I am a young driver and as a precautionary measure I decided to check the internet for a young driver insurance quote in Mississippi that suits my needs and budget. I thought it would be as easy as just clicking on several options and getting results but I didn’t know there were so many sub topics to choose from, help?

Kelly

Jackson, MS

It is quite aright to lbe confused when trying to get a quote for yourself over the internet. Most of us got used to the system where an insurance guy meets with us and gives us several options that are in a way tailor fit to our needs. Meeting with an insurance person is still an option but if you really want to get a young driver insurance quote on your own then here are a few things to consider that may help guide you.

The insurance company should ask you to enter your state or postal code. The insurance quote will vary from state to state, why? Because medical services and automobile repair rates vary from state to state and your insurance plan will adjust according to this 2 factors.

The insurance company will ask for the type of coverage you want. This is usually determined by what you want protected i.e. there are different options if you want to protect your car, the people who drive it, the property it may damage, or life it may damage because of an accident.

Once you identify the kind of protection you want you would also have to see how far you want to be protected, or arrange your coverage limits. You may choose to opt for a smaller coverage at a smaller premium rate or vise versa.

What is the best car to buy, so that I get affordable auto insurance in Mississippi?

Thelma

Jackson, MS

Auto insurance providers have devised a system of categorizing vehicles into different groups. Since there are so many types of vehicles in the market, this system helps them better assess a vehicle’s corresponding insurance rates. The higher the category your vehicle belongs to, the higher the premiums it will be assessed with. So, whether you are going to buy a brand-new or previously owned vehicle, knowing the category it falls in helps you better plan your budget.

Most small and inexpensive cars with low performance engines are cheap to insure. However, you should also consider if the car has a high theft rate. If so, then your auto insurance premiums will be quite expensive. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has recorded 769 auto thefts in Jackson in 2007. The rate has increased in the first six months of 2008 with almost 900 vehicle theft incidents reported. The most frequently stolen cars are Chevrolet pickups, Ford F150 Series and the Chevrolet Caprice, so you might want to cross these off your list. You can visit the DMV website for more information on cars that have high theft rate. Another thing to bear in mind when shopping for car is its safety features. Make sure to buy one that has been equipped with these as standard equipment, so that your Collision and Comprehensive Coverage will be assessed with more affordable auto insurance rates.

Reader’s Question:

I have a teenage son who just had his Learner’s permit. Do I have to add them in my auto insurance Mississippi?

Connie

Jackson, MS

If you have a child whose learned how to drive and is driving your car, he too should be covered by your auto insurance Mississippi. To do so, you have to add them to your policy so your carrier will cover him in case anything happens to him or to your car while driving. A part of your insuring contract was to notify your carrier within 30 days of any risk associated with your policy. This includes of course your son having to drive your vehicle. The reason why you have to is to ensure your claims in case anything happens. Failure to do so will result to misrepresentation; therefore, the company has all the right to deny your claims of covering your loss and damages in this event.

Still, some states require you to get your child covered under your auto insurance policy in Mississippi until he is not of legal age. When he reaches legal age however, and has his license you should add him as a regular driver on your policy so if such situation arises, your carrier will cover the expense for the damage and injury incurred at the time. But by the time he reaches legal age and is regularly driving your car under your policy, you can expect higher premiums. Keep in mind that the higher the risk, the higher the premiums. However, not all insurance companies deemed young drivers as a risk. You can still lower your premiums if you enroll your son to driving education and overall, it also helps if he has a clean driving record.

Reader’s Question:

What things should I consider to make sure I have sufficient coverage and at the same time pay cheap premiums here in Mississippi?

In your search for cheap auto insurance premiums in Mississippi, it is important to ensure that you have a sufficient amount of coverage. Having the appropriate level of coverage is somewhat a sensitive consideration. You would like to have the proper protection in the event of an accident, but of course, you don’t want to overpay for more that what you need. A motorist may be over insured and not know it and car insurance companies would seldom make you aware of that. Taking into account these pieces of advice about car insurance would help you figure out if you are over insured and probably identify how you could cut back on your policy and get the cheapest price for your Mississippi car insurance:

–In case you own an older vehicle, you have to be aware of its value. You don’t need comprehensive and collision coverage in case the fair market value is less than $2,000. Moreover, be aware that the value of vehicles depreciates over time. In case your vehicle is more than two years old and you need to reassess your coverage because you might be paying more than you should.

–Checking your Mississippi car insurance coverage every six months would help you keep away from being over or under insured. You could go online to compare car insurance quotes because this can save you a lot of time and money. Make certain that you obtain quotes from at least three car insurance companies to give you the best idea of the coverage most suitable for you.
